This book of devotions, like those published in the last preceding three years, has a modest but vital aim - to aid and encourage Christians to observe Lent. The idea is to provide a compilation of scriptural reflections for use for each day of the special season. For centuries, the Christian Church has given special emphasis to the period leading up to Easter known as Lent as a time of spiritual preparation. It seems the faithful would observe an intense and private time of fasting, repentance and prayers.
The continued observance of Lent is being recommended, even if it is for the sake of keeping tradition. But there is the added reason that a common devotion to the Lord among Christians around Lent is of immense value. Few will not benefit from a deliberate withdrawal from the world to have a time of quiet with the Saviour who had died on the Cross for them.
The reflections in this compilation have been written to help the reader meditate on the theme of the Cross of Christ - its significance, implications and demands for daily living. Hence, the book's title 'Take up Your Cross'.

Some suggestions for your daily devotions:
- Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted or distracted.
- Choose a fixed time and begin with a short hymn or song of worship to prepare your heart for receiving the Word of God.
- Take your time in meditating on the truth contained in the Scripture passage.
- Make a sincere commitment to the Lord (you may wish to modify the suggested commitment statement, or even make your own), and then spend some time praying.
- If you were particularly touched by an aspect of the reading that day, try to share your insights with at least one other person.
- Keep a journal that records significant insights.
